-
- pentium price are dropping quick... a side note, it seem intel didn't
- like the common practice of overclocking so they added some clock lock
- mecanism.
- Intel is still puting ALOT of effort in its x86 line. I'm unsure
- of this but the P6 offer roughly the same integer speed as a R10000
- for half the price.
- The x86 today offer good int performance, but still lack in fp
- performance compare to todays risc.
- You can get x586 100mhz for 50$ , so for low end its not that horrible.
- and very very low end you can get x486 80mhz for what 20$ now?
-
- In short , x86 (from intel and other, cyrix, amd) do provide good
- performance for the $. maybe the #1 ratio (I'm guessing)
-
- Personaly I prefere running linux then system7 anyday, I would prefere
- runing Warp anytime over system7, winNT over system7 etc.. etc...
-
- : : The Gemulator written for clones (and needing only

- : : in software an 8Mhz Atari ST at FULL speed. Atari TT speed emulations
- : : (33 Mhz 68030) are possible with Pentium processors.
-
- : Golly gee, that's just incredible. Did I mention Apple's 68K
- : emulator on a 100Mhz 601 is faster than a 40Mhz 040? By the time the
- : PowerAmiga surfaces, 'low end' machines could easily be producing 060
- : emulation speeds.
-
- Make you wish java native code was 680x0 :)
- But I really wish we didn't have to resort to hacking around and run
- EVER emulated code for other purposed then app like java.
-
- : : Full 680x0 binary compatibiliy. And the work is already done. Why not go
- : : for the LARGEST market?
-
- : Because if all we wanted was the largest market we'd all be using
- : Winbloze already. Following the lowest common denominator isn't something
- : to be proud of, IMO.
-
- I am the only one that find powermac terrible? I find them supper slow
- compared to pentium PC, and crash alot more. Thats MY observation.
- PC get priority today... and the PC HW running an OS like unix is
- far from beying the lowest common denominator.
- Some people never runner winbloze (like you say, but I found MS VC++ 4.x
- to be just superb, specially in its layout and user design) on PC HW...
-
- : : users right now. I'm assuming the work to allow 680x0 binary compatibility
- : : with the new RISC hardware involves either:
-
- : : 1) Licencing the translator from Apple (PowerPC)
-
- : The obvious choice. The chips are fast and cheap, the emulator tech
- : proven, reliable, and also quite fast.
-
- I really wish we didn't feel the need for that... I hate kludges, patches
- , fixes, hack. and thats all in one!
-
- : : 2) Licencing the translator from HP (HP-PA RISC)
-
- : Why? I fail to see the appeal of these chips for lower cost personal
- : computers when the PowerPC is already such an ideal candidate.
-
- The impression I have is IBM is not to thrilled about the PPC anymore...
- What I see is intel/amd/cyrix lowering prices of x86 CPU because they
- have a mass market that 'love'(are 'forced') to upgrade. So provide
- very cheap performing CPU, but also offer top of the line model.
- But I dont know what to make of the latest intel move, forgot the name
- of the project. their own OS/CPU...
-
- Also little by little the x86 is starting to look alot less like a x86.
- risc core, new level of 64bit registers and instructions...
-
- : : 3) Implementing a hardware instruction translator
- : : for whatever chip we're migrating to
-
- : Again, why bother? PPC isn't the only game in town, but in the
- : personal computer price/performance range it's the best.
-
- Yes, why bother.. lets make a portable OS based on the amiga OS!
- So people can buy a FAST! fully loaded system for <500$ and run the
- OS of their dream. Oh, and you could run that OS on your walker too,
- but who would want too? :)
-
- : : Why not move to the Clones? We could have minimum A500 performance on all
- : : 486's in all it's wonders AND the have the world's largest software library
- : : and userbase.
-
- A500 performance? knock on people doors and ask if they can donate you
- their used computer, I'm sure many A500 are sitting around colecting
- dust :)
-
- : Because most of that huge library is low-end DOS programs? Because it
- : would shackle the Amiga to the often flaky and anachronistic PC
- : architectures? Because it would, if very very slightly, enhance sales of
- : a chip architecture that's damn near older than I am? :-) Let the dead
- : lie--screw the unwashed masses. Let's see a little vision, a little
- : AMBITION from the AT camp. Amiga Intel PCs? Yech.
-
- Combined their is alot of Os2, WinNT, Unix, nextstep, solaris?, win95
- applications you can get... I dont like the idea but I think the PC os
- that will be the major one in the year to come is WinNT... Again MS
- will push a HW 'rush', something the industrie love. The side effect
- could be very nice for people running the NAOS (Next Amiga OS :) is that
- they could probably get 32meg for 200$, enought to run anything they like
- while this would be used just to boot WinNT :)
-
- I think AT shoulnd't even try to build a computer if its going to be
- more $ then PC class HW. A portable OS... now that make sense.. to me :)
